Steve Harvey's Miss. Universe gaffe

Steve Harvey has really done it this time, getting the hopes of entire nation up and crushing it with one fell swoop. During the 2014, oops I’m sorry, I meant 2015, Miss.Universe beauty pageant, Steve Harvey named Miss.Colombia as Miss.Universe. As soon as Miss.Colombia was crowned the crowd rejoiced, and Colombians every celebrated as one of their fellow countrywomen had won the title of Miss.Universe for a second year in a row. Miss.Colombia was crowned, she thanked the crowded, took in her victory and she even shed tears of joy, but within minutes it all came crashing down.

Only after Miss.Colombia had time to take in her new found victory, Steve Harvey butted in stating his apologise and that he’d made a mistake. The crowd went silent, and Steve Harvey announced the first runner up was Miss.Colombia and that Miss.Philippines was the actual winner. Pure devastation is what must have been going through every Colombian’s heart, Steve Harvey just duped them of their victory, and can you imagine what Miss.Colombia was feeling, ouch! She remained speechless on stage, frozen, like a deer in the headlights, as she had her victory stripped from her. Miss. Philippines was just as surprised, as she made her way down to centre stage, to take her place as Miss. Universe. Yes maybe Steve Harvey did awkwardly apologise over and over on national television, but was that enough? How can you mess something so simple up, he even admitted that his card showed Miss.Philippines as the winner, but he somehow still managed to screw that up.

After the dust had settled, many Colombians were outraged that Miss.Colombia was only Miss.Universe for two minutes, before she was uncrowned. Subsequently, Colombians have come together in support of Ariadna Gutierrez (Miss.Colombia), as even Colombia’s President has stated she is still their Miss.Universe even if it was for two minutes. Miss.Philippines has also given her support to Ariadna Gutierrez, by stating she’s “an amazing woman” who she has “bonded together forever by a unique experience”, and that Ariadna is “strong and beautiful … inside and out”. In response to the overwhelming amount of positivity and support given to her, Ariadna has posted that she wants “to thank each of the people who have sent [her] messages of support and strength!” and that she was “the luckiest woman in the world to have the support not only of one country but of the world!”. Moreover, Ariadna light-heartedly said she was happy that she “could give the joy of being Miss Universe to [her] country only for a few minutes”, and went on to “congratulate all Filipinos for their new Miss Universe”. Talk about being a good sport, I couldn’t imagine being stripped of my dream on live television, broadcasted around the world, and coming back with such grace.

Accordingly, most of us would think that Steve Harvey would have some consequences for his on air gaffe, but it’s the exact opposite. Instead sources from ET have stated Steve Harvey is being signed on for another multi-year contract, to be the host of Miss.Universe for years to come. Really, after all the heartache and humiliation Steve Harvey has caused he’ll be signed on again, for at least three years as the Miss.Universe host. Let’s just hope that Steve Harvey doesn’t make another on air screw up, because he’s already gone down in history as the first Miss.Universe host with the reading abilities of a first grader.
